18 Famous People Who Are Missing Body Parts – mental_floss on YouTube (Ep.202)

Hi I’m Josh Sundquist, from this channel,
hopping in for John this week to host Mental Floss on YouTube. Did you know that actor Robert David Hall,
famous as CSI lead Dr. Albert Robbins, is missing both of his legs due to a car accident?
Interestingly, he’s only 5 feet 8 inches tall, and you have to respect his restraint
because if I had two fake legs, which means you can basically choose to be any height
you want, I would make myself at least a foot taller. And that’s the first of many famous people
who are missing body parts that I’m going to tell you about today in honor of April
being Amputee Awareness Month. I’m going to broadly define “amputee” in this
video to include not only limbs, but also appendages, like fingers and ears, mostly
because I want to mention that painter Vincent van Gogh cut off his own ear. He then wrapped
it up and gave it to a prostitute. If only the doctor could’ve changed his timeline. Adventurer Aron Ralston cut his own arm off
with a dull pocket knife after being trapped for 127 hours under a rock. Fortunately for
Hollywood, he looks exactly like James Franco and he happened to have a video camera with
him. Speaking of traumatic amputation stories that
have been made into inspirational movies, soul surfer Bethany Hamilton returned to competitive
surfing after losing her arm in a shark attack. Da na na na na na na na. That’s probably
copyrighted music. Due to an unfortunate accident involving a
roast beef slicer at Arby’s, Former White House Chief of Staff and Current Mayor of
Chicago Rahm Emanuel is missing his right middle finger. Speaking of people who were unable to give
the bird, legendary outlaw Jesse James lost his middle finger while cleaning his gun.
After his death, his body was positively identified by that missing finger. Also missing part of his finger, in this case
due to an unfortunate door-slamming accident: Actor Matthew Perry. Now you have an excuse
to watch that re-run of Friends for the tenth time. You’re welcome. Ted Kennedy Jr, son of the late Senator Ted
Kennedy, had his leg amputated due to childhood cancer. Actor Eric Stolhankse, best known for playing
Rabbit in the movie Super Troopers, was born without his right leg from the knee down.
He also played Todd in Beerfest which kind of makes you wonder if “Das Boot” was
actually just his prosthesis filled up with beer. Turns out there a lot of amputee musicians,
including jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, who lost both legs below the knee to diabetes, and Rick Allen, the drummer for Def Leppard
who lost an arm in a car accident. The lead guitarists of both Black Sabbath
and the Grateful Dead were missing fingers. Respectively, they were Tony Iommi, who lost two fingers in an industrial
accident and Jerry Garcia whose brother chopped off his
finger with an ax, but that didn’t stop him from inventing a delicious Ben and Jerry’s
ice cream flavor. Although she wasn’t a musician, she married
one, I’m talking about Super Model Heather Mills, who lost her leg in a collision with
a London Police Officer on a Motorcycle. Confederate General Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson
got his nickname for standing stoically like a stonewall in the face of battle, but he
ended up losing a part of that wall, specifically an arm, after he was shot by friendly fire. Actor James Doohan lost a finger at D-Day
before portraying Montgomery “Scotty” Scott on Star Trek—hey look these guys were
on Star Trek too And finally we return to the salon and not
a moment too soon, my hands are getting very cold. Ahh, so much better. To tell you about
Galileo. He lost three of his fingers after his death, after which time they changed hands
(no pun intended) for several centuries before two of them disappeared for over one hundred
years. But in 2009 they were discovered in a jar and they now orbit the sun together
from a museum in Italy. Thanks for watching Mental Floss on YouTube,
which is made with the help of all these very nice people. Also, I’m Josh Sundquist. Please
check out my channel for more amputee-related humor. Every week we endeavor to answer one of your
mind-blowing questions. This week’s question comes from KongLor who asks, “Why do fingernails
grow so much faster than toenails? Or so it seems.” Well, KongLor, you’re right. Fingernails
actually grow three times faster than toenails, but nobody knows why. Here’s what we do
know: your fingernails will grow fastest in your teens and twenties and they also grow
faster in the summer. Thanks for asking that mind-blowing question
and leave more mind-blowing questions in the comments below. Once again, I’m Josh Sundquist, and as they
say in John’s hometown, don’t forget to be awesome.

Author Since: Mar 11, 2019

  1. The actor who played the first black power ranger was born without a left middle finger.
He couldn't flip off the producers for making the black guy the black power ranger

  2. Oh my god they need to stop playing the tfios movie trailer as an ad. I'm literally crying ??????

  3. "Stonewall" Jackson's first (and most commonly used) name was Thomas. His middle name was Johnathan but he was commonly called Tom by those who knew him best.

  4. The first thing I thought of when I saw this title was "Josh Sundquist" and then what do you know he just hoops on into the video!

  5. Tony Iommi actually isn't missing fingers he lost the very tips of two fingers that is why Black Sabbath started playing in drop tune originally though after him I kind of became a thing.

  6. Let's not forget organist Heinrich Fleischer (1912–2006). He fought in World War II, in which he lost one finger on his left hand and another half finger. After the war, Fleischer re-taught himself to play the organ with his remaining fingers. He went on to become a world famous recitalist and organist at Valparaiso University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Minnesota.

  7. From what I knew, fingernails growth is direct proportional with the finger's length. I might be wrong though…

  8. What about what has to be surely the most famous person in relation to loosing body parts, Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson? He lost his eye, then part of an ear, then his arm… though still went from Junior Officer, to become Admiral of the White (second highest rank in the British Navy behind Fleet Admiral). Admittedly, ended up then loosing two vertebrae to a bullet… and dying… but be it through stupidity arrogance or courage.. he's still got to be the poster boy for over achieving despite missing body parts!

  9. Walter Emanuel Jones, the ORIGINAL Black Power Ranger in the '90s, has no middle finger on his left hand because he lost it in an accident at the age of 4.

  10. Comedian Wil Anderson wasn't on this list, which annoys me, since he hosts a show called the last leg and is a major advocate for awareness.

  11. Also, active NBA player Gerald Green is missing part of his ring finger on his right hand. Since 2005, he has played for seven NBA teams, two professional teams in Russia, a Chinese team, and three teams in the NBA D-League, a minor league owned by the NBA. He's known for his exceptional dunking ability, winning the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2007, as well as a national high school slam dunk contest in 2005. He lost part of his finger in when he was in the 6th grade when practicing dunks on a makeshift hoop while wearing a ring on the finger. The ring caught onto a nail and ripped his finger.

  12. Gerald green should've been in this, very inspirational basketball player for the Phoenix Suns who lost his ring finger I believe,in a child hood accident

  13. Van Gogh did NOT cut off his own ear. This myth did not appear until like 10 years after he was dead when someone else was writing a biography about him for some kind of publication. It is a myth, it did not happen.

  14. Robert David Hall didn't lose his legs in a "car accident." He's a Vietnam veteran, and had them blown off during his service. What a pathetically horrible introduction to an already waste of a "mental-floss."

  15. Ummm…how do you musicians missing fingers and leave out Django Reinhardt?!?!

Also how about Anthony Robles, NCAA D1 wrestling champion born with one leg.

  16. I would like to argue that Stonewall Jackson shouldn't be on this list, because, even though he lost an arm, he died from the wound less than a week later.

  17. Stonewall Jackson's first name was Thomas, not Jonathon.  That may have been said before in the 1010 comments, but I'm not going to take the time to read through them all.

  18. Aaron Ralston is nothing more than a failed Darwin Award. Anybody with half a brain knows you dont hike alone for that exact reason. Him losing his arm wasn't some heroic act, it was the price he paid for being an idiot. It wasnt bravery, it was the desperation of a delirious, malnourished, half dead body doing what any trapped animal would do. He's not a hero, he's a cautionary tale.
What's next? make a movie about some drunk moron who rolls his car and ends up in ICU because he was lucky enough not to die from it?

  19. Mind blowing question…  Why do we start growing hair from our nose and ears as we get older and less so on our heads?

  20. Josh is so great. Also, when he said Galileo's fingers now orbited the sun together, I briefly thought he meant they were shot up into space lol

  21. If you were missing both legs, you would not make yourself a foot taller, because: do you know how hard it is to find find pants for tall and slender men? You would be surprised.

  22. William S. Burroughs cut off his left pinkie finger with a pair of poultry shears in 1939 and gave it to ex-lover Jack Anderson.

  23. If we want to get technical Stonewall Jackson lost the entire "stone wall" after a friendly fire incident since it eventually killed him.

  24. This is fake. No true scientist can utter the name 'Galileo' without singing the rest of Bohemian Rhapsody. I call shenanigans!!!!

  25. Truth is very few people realized that Matthew Perry had a shortened right middle finger because he hid it a lot early on. Truth is if you watch some of his more recent works like The Odd Couple, you'll notice it more. Also, interesting twist: his character on Friends, Chandler Bing was missing a toe. It was a bit of a thing because of the missing finger tip from what I have heard.

  26. The drummer from Green Day lost a testicle in a stage stunt. And if you know anything about his personality then that's not particularly surprising.

  27. Clyde Barrow chopped some of his toes off with an axe in order to get moved to the hospital when he was in jail because the jail was really bad

  28. Radar, of M*A*S*H* is also missing some fingers on his left hand which is almost never seen, he did a good job of hiding it.
